L1danceFest 2012 brochure

„I fell in love with the L1danceFest last year right from the start, because the whole thing started outdoors with Catalonian dancers in the square when the people of Budapest were coursing around outside the Gödör Klub after work. It was like an offering for the public: come join us, the door is open to you... Those ready to accept the challenge and actually enter the theatres of the L1danceFest got a special five-day tour around (mostly) Central European contemporary dance and performance. Thanks to the travels and hard work of choreographer, dancer, mover and shaker Marta Ladjánszki here was a program that was exacting but idiosyncratic, as it should be from a great curator: specific to the here and now, to the professional relationships being built and strengthened between the maturing independent cultural workers of a busy region that for decades before could not much move, could only rarely share, and could never be idiosyncratic. In a flash I got to take in works by Hungarian, Czech, Austrian, Polish, Slovak and Slovenian innovators - all working hard to expand your horizons, provoke your imagination, and yes, entertain.” Ewan McLaren (CA/CZ), director of Motus – Alfred ve Dvoře Theatre, Prague

L1 Association founded in 1998 as an alliance of independent Hungarian dancers has been focusing on the promotion of contemporary dance from the very beginning by supporting the productions, coproductions and presenting the works of talented Hungarian and foreign artists. L1 Contemporary Dance Festival (a.k.a. L1danceFest) considered to be the most important annual event of the Association has gradually developed into a carefully selected European muster of unique contemporary dance and theatre projects. Its general aim is to import new creative thinking and progressive art practices to Hungary.

The class will take the dancers through a process of coordination, fundamental placement of bone structure and awareness of breath while moving. The dancers will be given patterns of movement which will allow them to become acquainted with the potential of generating power through the shift of body weight in space as well as the natural swing of the torso. While they are going through this journey, they will be absorbing movement elements and combinations which will eventually surface in the final 15 to 30 minutes of class as a short choreography.

"Play is a natural phenomenon, which since the beginning has directed the way of the world, the arrangement of substance, its organization into living structures as well as the social behaviour of man." (Manfred Egon)
Play is a natural state. Everybody plays, with toys, computers, thoughts, rules, others, and themselves. Play can also be understood as an enactment of reality. In the last 10 years playing became an issue in the context of Performance. (Xavier le Roy with „Self-interview”, 2001) This course is designed to be a playground. We investigate improvisational games and scores in order to practice performing and to produce a reflective dialog together. How does the participation/interaction become a creative, changing intervention in a performative context? We will use the open source platform of everybody´s toolbox. Are you ready to play, to sweat, to reflect, to perform?

L1danceFest works again together with well known, Hungarian designers during the festival. The hosts of the evenings wear the designers’s dresses.
